    Background

    Katarzyna Kujawa-Roeleveld (born in Poland in 1968) works since 1995 for Wageningen University and since recently (2008) for LeAF. She graduated in 1991 from Poznan University of Technology (PUT, Poland) as a sanitary engineer. For few years (till 1995) she worked part time for PUT as a teacher and a scientist in the field of biological wastewater treatment, consulting company AQUA (Poznan) as a process designer and for a Water Board (Aquanet, Poznan) as a technologist on a treatment plant. In 1995 she started her PhD research that she completed with the thesis entitled ‘Estimation of denitrification potential with respiration based techniques’ in 2000. From 1999 till recently she was involved in several projects dealing with, so called, new sanitation (source oriented sanitation) involving separate collection and treatment of domestic wastewater streams with focus on maximal treatment and recovery of resources and elimination of human pharmaceutical compounds.
